What makes the scarf beautiful is not only its colour and design, but also the authentic story and experience of the person who wears it.

One of the things I love to do when travelling is to buy a scarf from the destinations that I have visited. Handmade scarves have soul and character, are so much better than so many of those mass produced tacky souvenirs.

I love a simple and clutter free home, and that includes my wardrobe. Several years ago I was forced to clean out my closet as I had filled my own closet plus the spare bedroom closet – even worse I couldn’t close the doors on either of the closets (yep that is bad). I was left with a pile of clothes I hardly wore and a credit card debt. I ended up giving my entire wardrobe away and cut down my clothes to simple basics. From that experience  I now refuse to buy into trends, I have found a more simple style that can be slightly altered  – yet still be in fashion.

In my personal opinion buying an entire wardrobe based on the seasons fashion is just a big money pit, however just like the little black dress and black jacket; a collection of scarves is timeless – you can never go wrong. Like the classic black jacket a colourful scarf can turn a plain dress or shirt into something unique, fun or sophisticated.

The scarf falls beautifully,  allowing for innumerable styling possibilities that transform the look depending on how you wrap the scarf around your neck. An original and one off-piece, the scarf adds a beautiful dose of colour and style to an outfit.

So if you find yourself being a slave to fashion and buying something new almost every weekend (like I once did), maybe you may want to reconsider your spending habits (and how you spend your time). Instead of buying those 4 dresses in a different colour just because they are on sale, buy one dress and then get creative by thinking of all the great ways you can change the look with the different colour scarves you have collected over your travels.

If you are new to scarves and have no scarves at all or at least none you like - then instead of buying the dress go shopping for a beautiful scarf that you love.

I spent the afternoon photographing a few of my personal favourite ways to wear a scarf – I hope you enjoy.
